Saint Padre Pio

Picture
Padre Pio was born on May 25, 1887 in Pietrelcina, in southern Italy. He entered the noviate of Capuchin Friars at the age of 15 and was ordained a priest in 1910.

On September 20, 1918 the five wounds of Our Lord's Passion appeared on his body, making him the first stigmatized priest in the history of the Church.

His whole life was marked by long hours of prayer and continual austerity. He was called to his heavenly reward on September 23, 1968.

The San Damiano Cross

Picture
The San Damiano Cross is the cross that St. Francis of Assisi was praying in front of  when he received the commission from the Lord to rebuild the Church.

The original cross presently hangs in the
Basilica of Saint Clare (Basilica di Santa Chiara) in Assisi, Italy.

Franciscans cherish this cross as the symbol of their mission from God. The cross is called an icon cross because it contains images of people who have a part in the meaning of the cross.
